About Ruben Blades:
Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna is a Panamanian salsa singer, songwriter, actor, Latin jazz musician, and activist, performing musically most often in the Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz genres. As songwriter, Blades brought the lyrical sophistication of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova as well as experimental tempos and politically inspired Nuyorican salsa to his music, creating thinking persons' (salsa) dance music. Blades has composed dozens of musical hits, the most famous of which is "Pedro Navaja," a song about a neighborhood thug who is killed by a very attractive street walker he actually knows, he tried to kill her, she shot him, and they both die, a bum finds them, and takes his belongings, (his song "Sorpresas" continues the story), inspired by "Mack the Knife." He also composed and sings "Patria" (Motherland), which many Panamanians consider their second national anthem. He has won 7 Grammy and 5 Latin Grammy Awards. His film and television acting career began in 1983, and has continued, sometimes with several-year breaks to focus on other projects, though to the 2015 TV series Fear the Walking Dead, in which he plays the main=cast character Daniel Salazar.
It's almost as if people think that in Latin America we're not hip to what's happening here.
Ruben BladesIn those days the big U.S. labels didn't have any particular interest in the Latin market.
